The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Dr. Monica Musenero Masanza , visited East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Pump Station 1 (PS1) in Hoima on 31 August 2026 as part of a supervisory visit to assess the progress of the EACOP Project.
During the visit, the Minister and her delegation received an update on the project’s latest developments, covering construction progress, employment and local content, engineering design, and environmental restoration. The delegation was informed that the project has now reached 92.7% overall completion, marking significant progress towards completion.
EACOP Deputy Managing Director, John B. Habumugisha, briefed the Minister and her delegation on the employment opportunities generated by the project. He highlighted that more than 12,000 people have been directly employed across the EACOP Project, including more than 4,000 Ugandans.
Beyond direct employment, the project has contributed to more than 20,000 indirect employment opportunities, supporting livelihoods, local businesses and economic activity along the project corridor. He noted that EACOP continues to prioritise local capacity development and create opportunities for people and businesses in both Uganda and Tanzania.
He also highlighted the project’s commitment to environmental restoration along the pipeline corridor. As part of these efforts, EACOP is committed to planting 500,000 indigenous trees to support the restoration of areas affected by project activities and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the environment.
EACOP Project Director, Antoine Moreau, provided an overview of the pipeline’s engineering and operational design and its associated facilities. He explained that the EACOP system comprises six pump stations and two pressure reduction stations, including two pump stations located in Uganda.
These facilities form an integral part of the infrastructure designed to safely and efficiently transport Uganda’s crude oil from Kabaale in Hoima to the export terminal at Tanga, Tanzania.
As one of the key facilities along the EACOP system, Pump Station 1 plays an important role in the transportation of crude oil along the pipeline route and is among the major infrastructure facilities supporting the project’s operations.
The Minister commended the EACOP team for the progress achieved to date and appreciated the work being undertaken to advance the project. She expressed pride in the achievements recorded so far and encouraged the team to maintain the momentum as the project moves towards completion.
