The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rotary to jointly implement the EACOP Green Schools Initiative – a transformative environmental programme targeting schools along the EACOP pipeline route.
Signed on 5th August 2025, the MoU marks a significant step forward in EACOP’s broader commitment to sustainability and social impact. The initiative aims to empower students and school communities across eleven districts – Hoima, Kikuube, Kakumiro, Mubende, Kyankwanzi, Lwengo, Kyotera, Rakai, Sembabule, and Gomba – by integrating environmental education and practical solutions into their learning environments.
The programme will focus on:
- Installation of solar energy systems
- Development of green spaces, including fruit and vegetable gardens
- Enhancement of sanitation and handwashing facilities
- Introduction of sustainable waste management systems
- Implementation of rainwater harvesting infrastructure
- Delivery of awareness campaigns on environmental, health, and safety practices
Speaking at the MoU signing in Kampala, JB Habumugisha, Our Deputy Managing Director emphasized the importance of building sustainability from the ground up: “The EACOP Green Schools Initiative is a proactive response to the pressing need for sustainable solutions within our communities. By embedding environmental interventions in schools, we will address immediate challenges while nurturing a generation that values and protects our natural resources. This partnership with Rotary is an important step towards that vision.”
Leaders from Rotary International commended the partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to fostering environmental change through youth engagement.
Mr. Geoffrey Kitakule, Governor of Rotary District 9213, noted: “This partnership is timely. Rotary’s commitment to supporting the environment aligns perfectly with the Green Schools Initiative. There is no better way to secure a sustainable future than working with young people — the champions of tomorrow.”
Ms. Christine Kyeyune Kawooya, Governor of Rotary District 9214, added: “Through this initiative, Rotary will work closely with schools to promote tree planting, sustainable waste management, and climate education. By empowering students to become custodians of the environment, we are investing in a greener, healthier, and more resilient future for all.”
The signed MoU establishes a framework for joint planning, resource mobilization, and coordinated implementation – ensuring that schools along the pipeline corridor become living models of sustainability and drivers of positive community transformation.
