EACOP UNVEILS THE COMMUNITY ROAD SAFETY PROJECT.

In partnership with Safe Way Right Way (SWRW) Initiative, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Limited launched the EACOP Community Road Safety Project on Wednesday 11th June 2025 at Hotel Africana Kampala. With road safety being a critical pillar of the Socio-Economic Initiatives (SEIs), the new project aims at building safer communities along the EACOP corridor.

At the launch, Ismail Nsereko, the Government Relations Manager, urged all stakeholders including government agencies, development partners, local lenders, researchers, and the media to collaborate and shape a road safety framework that is inclusive, practical, and effective.

Lawrence Ssempagi, the Regulatory Compliance Lead discussed the EACOP project overview and the transport systems supporting the project. He highlighted the measures put in place by the company to ensure road safety such as road rangers that monitor the trucks that transport the pipes to EACOP sites, journey management plans, prohibited night driving (no driving after 6:30pm), respect of speed limits, and incentives such as “Driver of the Month” to ensure safe driving.

Irene Namuyiga, the General Manager SWRW Initiative led the discussion on the National Road Safety Action Plan, focusing on safe and sustainable transport systems, inclusive mobility and raising awareness about road safety. The discussion highlighted the importance of instilling road safety cultures in children, training of police officers on inclusive road safety and training of journalists to ensure better reporting on road safety.

Speaking at the event, General Edward Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport highlighted the importance of road safety in relation to regional growth, and the need for road-user behavior change through mass sensitization and enforcement collaboration. “As we uplift our communities through infrastructural development, let us collaborate to ensure their safety through safe roads,” he said.

The launch of the project is a demonstration of a shared responsibility by EACOP and all stakeholders to commit to the safety of all road users.
