EACOP COMMISSIONS FIRST OF THREE COMMUNITY VALLEY DAMS IN KALABATA VILLAGE, KAKUMIRO DISTRICT (UGANDA)

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable community development and environmental stewardship, EACOP has commissioned a newly constructed solar-powered valley dam at Kalabata Village, Kakumiro District. This milestone marks the delivery of the first of three valley tanks being developed along the pipeline corridor, with the others located in Lyabuguma Village (Kyotera District) and Nseese Village (Sembabule District).

The water infrastructure project forms part of EACOP’s broader Safe Water Initiative, which seeks to replace and restore communal water points that were affected by the pipeline’s construction. These efforts are guided by the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), which outlines specific mitigation measures for project-impacted assets and community resources. The three valley dams were prioritized due to their central role in serving both household and productive water needs.

The Kalabata valley dam has been designed with long-term sustainability in mind. It incorporates a solar-powered system to enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Built to serve the community for the next 25 years, the dam will provide a reliable source of water for domestic use, livestock, and small-scale agriculture, especially during the dry seasons.

Speaking at the commissioning event, EACOP’s Andrew Namanya our Livelihood restoration lead commended the spirit of collaboration exhibited by the Kalabata community and local government. He reaffirmed the project’s commitment to ensuring that the infrastructure continues to serve its intended purpose, with contractor support committed for a six-month post-construction monitoring and troubleshooting period.

The remaining two valley tanks in Kyotera and Sembabule Districts are in their final stages and are expected to be commissioned soon.
