EACOP Hands over Sanitation Facilities and Sports Equipment To Kabonera Community.

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline has opened new and sanitation facilities to Kabonera Community in Kabonera Village, Kyotera District with the aim of improving public health, and sanitation of the surrounding communities of Kabonera, Nabigasa, Kabugimbi, Lukoma and Kakoma, as well as schools within the vicinity.

The sanitation facilities include a four-stance drainable pit latrine block with facilities for both male and female users. The facility features adequate ventilation, lighting, and privacy, complemented by a rainwater harvesting tank and landscaped surroundings. These are intended to promote better hygiene, enhance public health, and provide a safer and more suitable environment for young people, schoolchildren, and other community members using the playground.

During the same event, EACOP handed over sports equipment to support football, netball, and volleyball activities. The equipment comprises standard football goalposts with nets, netball poles, volleyball poles and nets, sports jerseys, referee uniform sets complete with whistles, cards and accessories, as well as footballs, volleyballs and netballs. The equipment is intended to encourage participation in organised sports, promote teamwork and discipline, and create opportunities for young people from the surrounding villages and schools to interact and develop their sporting talents.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, EACOP’s Social Economic Investment Manager, Matred Murungi noted that the initiative forms part of EACOP’s Social Economic Investment (SEI) programme, under the Community Health and Safety pillar. “EACOP is committed to responding to community-identified needs through practical interventions that contribute to local well-being. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those relating to good health and well-being (SDG-3), gender equality (SDG-5), clean water and sanitation (SDG-6), and inclusive communities (SD-G10). By combining sanitation infrastructure with sports equipment, the initiative addresses both community health and recreational needs while supporting a more inclusive environment for girls and boys.”

The sanitation facilities and sports equipment were officially handed over in a ceremony held in Kabonera village, Kyotera District, attended by local leaders, including Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr. Matia Kagugube, area local leaders, and community representatives.

In his remarks, Deputy RDC Mr. Matia Kagugube praised the project and urged the community to take on responsibility over the facilities, stating: “EACOP has made a valuable contribution to our community by providing these sanitation facilities and sports equipment. I urge the youth, community leaders and all beneficiaries to take good care of these facilities and use them responsibly. Let us work together to ensure that this investment continues to benefit our community for many years to come. These facilities belong to us, and their sustainability depends on our collective responsibility.”

EACOP reaffirms its commitment to supporting meaningful community investments that respond to local priorities and contribute to the well-being of communities along the project corridor.
