EACOP LAUNCHES “KEEP A GIRL IN SCHOOL INITIATIVE” – PHASE I

EACOP has officially launched the Keep a Girl in School Initiative – Phase I under its Social Economic Investment and Corporate Social Responsibility (SEI/CSR) Programme. The initiative aims to improve Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHM) in selected primary and secondary schools along the EACOP corridor in Tanzania.

Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management remains a critical challenge across Tanzania. Many schoolgirls continue to face barriers including limited access to affordable sanitary products, inadequate water and sanitation facilities, and a lack of private changing spaces. Cultural taboos surrounding menstruation further contribute to stigma and limited open dialogue, affecting girls’ confidence and participation in school life.

Although the Ministry of Health has developed National Guidelines on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management to promote a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach across the education, health, and water sectors, significant gaps remain in implementation. As a result, many girls rely on unsafe reusable materials such as cloth and often without access to clean water, soap, or safe spaces to manage their hygiene.

Studies estimate that between 15.9% and 20% of schoolgirls miss one to two days of school each month due to menstruation-related challenges. This absenteeism negatively affects academic performance, learning outcomes, and overall well-being, while increasing the risk of social exclusion.

Recognizing that menstruating girls in communities along the EACOP pipeline corridor face similar challenges, Phase I of the initiative will focus on improving access to safe, hygienic, dignified, and environmentally friendly menstrual hygiene solutions. The programme seeks to reduce menstruation-related absenteeism, enhance learning outcomes, and strengthen school WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) services.

Phase I will be implemented across three regions:

· Singida Region – 6 schools

· Shinyanga Region – 7 schools

· Dodoma Region – 6 schools

In total, 4,596 students from 19 schools will benefit from the initiative.

A central component of the programme is the distribution of specially prepared Dignity Hampers designed to support safe and sustainable menstrual management. Each hamper will include:

· Two packs of reusable sanitary pads ( 8 pieces)

· Four panties

· A small pack of detergent

· Four pegs

· A 10-liter bucket

These essential materials are intended to promote hygiene, restore dignity, and support consistent school attendance among girls of menstruating age.

Through the Keep a Girl in School Initiative, EACOP reaffirms its commitment to supporting inclusive education, community well-being, and sustainable social investment along its areas of operation. By addressing menstrual health challenges, the programme aims to create safer and more supportive school environments where girls can learn with confidence and reach their full potential.
