EACOP, through it’s Socio-Economic Investment/Corporate Social Responsibility (SEI/CSR) Programme execution in partnership with the Rural Energy Agency (REA), will implement the Hamlet Electrification Initiative to expand access to electricity in underserved rural communities along the EACOP pipeline route.
While, electricity access remains a national priority in Tanzania, only 38.6% of rural households had access to electricity as of 2023. In support of Government of Tanzania, under the Rural Energy Master Plan, the initiative will be rolled out in phases, starting with a pilot phase in Geita and Kagera Regions.
The pilot will benefit 17 hamlets: 13 hamlets in Missenyi and Muleba Districts (Kagera Region) and 4 hamlets in Bukombe and Mbogwe Districts (Geita Region). The project has a total commitment of USD 3 million, co-financed by EACOP and REA.
The initiative aims to improve access to reliable electricity for households and public institutions, stimulate local economic activities, enhance service delivery, and improve community wellbeing. The initiative, aligns with Tanzania’s National Energy Compact, EACOP SEI/CSR Pillar 4 – Sustainable Energy and contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) on universal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy.
The Hamlet Electrification Initiative demonstrates EACOP’s long-term commitment to sustainable development and partnership with the Government of Tanzania. By extending electricity access to underserved rural hamlets, the project will contribute to economic empowerment, improved social services, and enhanced quality of life for communities along the EACOP pipeline route.
