The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) has officially launched the Youth Economic Empowerment (YEE) Project, a flagship initiative under its Sustainability Policy, aimed at building the skills, capacity, and confidence of young people across Tanzania.
The launch ceremony in Bukombe, Geita, was graced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko, who highlighted the importance of the initiative not only for the youth but also for the broader value chain of the EACOP Project. “I thank the Presidents of Uganda and Tanzania for their cooperation in implementing the EACOP Project. As highlighted by EACOP’s leadership, we expect the project to be completed by July 2026, a significant milestone for our government. My greatest satisfaction is seeing projects like this benefit our citizens throughout the value chain, especially communities along the pipeline route. It is our duty to safeguard and embrace this project. I have always said that for any project to succeed, it must be owned and protected by the people. EACOP’s step of introducing YEE is an excellent way of bringing communities closer to their project,” he said.
Adding to this, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, noted how the programme aligns with national development priorities. “Alongside youth empowerment, the Government is also extending electricity access to nearby communities, which presents another valuable opportunity for citizens. This will significantly enhance livelihoods and development in the areas impacted by the EACOP Project,” he remarked.
The EACOP Acting General Manager, Mr. Geofrey Mponda emphasized the long term vision behind the programme, explaining that the company’s responsibility goes beyond pipeline construction. “This initiative reflects EACOP’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of the pipeline go beyond infrastructure delivery. By equipping young people with skills, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship opportunities, we are investing in the future and creating lasting value for communities across Tanzania.”
Building on this, the EACOP SEI Manager, Mrs. Clare Haule explained the scope of the first phase of the project; “The YEE Project is part of EACOP’s Sustainability Policy under the Future Generations pillar, aimed at building the capacity of youth and increasing access to economic opportunities within the communities impacted by the project. In its first phase, the YEE Project will be implemented in the regions of Geita, Kagera, Tabora, and Tanga, covering 152 villages and benefiting approximately 12,261 youth over a period of 24 months.”
The programme seeks to equip young people with practical skills relevant to their current roles, alongside training in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and digital business practices. It will also guide youth groups on strategies to grow and formalize their ventures. With its guiding call to action “Learn, Grow, Empower Yourself” the YEE Project inspires young people to take charge of their futures. By spanning four regions and reaching more than 12,000 youth over two years, it aims to empower the next generation with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities needed to thrive.
