In line with its commitment to national content / local content and the regulatory frameworks of the Governments of Uganda and Tanzania, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is dedicated to nurturing a skilled and sustainable local workforce through its international internship program. This program, lasting between 5 days to 6 months, is a key component of EACOP’s strategy to enhance local expertise and align with national and local content goals, with a strong emphasis on capacity building.
The internship program connects final-year students and recent graduates with EACOP’s tier-one contractors and suppliers, offering essential work experience and hands-on training. The nature and duration of each internship are tailored to the specific needs of the respective contractors or suppliers. Interns benefit from opportunities to travel abroad to manufacturing plants and work closely with experts involved in the pipeline project. These experiences provide practical, real-world insights that complement academic training.
The program not only supports the personal and professional growth of participants by immersing them in real-world work environments but also contributes to the overall success of the EACOP project. It stands as a testament to EACOP’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of professionals in Uganda and Tanzania. In both countries, the program reflects EACOP’s broader vision of regional capacity building and economic development.
To date, EACOP has facilitated internships and graduate trainee programs with over 243 (UG – 127, TZ – 116) across all project tiers, with 102 (UG – 53, TZ – 49) of these interns gaining international exposure. The mentioned graduate trainees have participated in international and local internships with EACOP contractors and suppliers, traveling to various countries including China, UAE, Oman, Singapore, Italy, Egypt, Spain, Malaysia, Turkey, India, Belgium, UK, Netherlands, and to project sites within Uganda and Tanzania.
EACOP has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with a variety of esteemed Ugandan and Tanzanian institutions, marking a significant step forward in collaborative initiatives. These partnerships are designed to enhance training, knowledge sharing, and innovation, strengthening our commitment to the National Content during project execution.
To date, EACOP has signed MoUs with Uganda Petroleum Institute Kigumba (UPIK), Makerere University, Kyambogo University, University of Dar es Salaam, VETA Moshi, Arusha Technical College as well as with professional bodies (e.g. the institute of Surveyors of Uganda). Some of EACOP’s tier one contractors have also gone a step further in forging their own MOUs with these and other institutions across the country and with bodies like the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI). By working together with different training institutions and professional bodies, EACOP aims to leverage expertise and resources, ensuring impact outcomes and shared success for all stakeholders involved.
